Cannabis extracts are made by separating trichomes from cannabis plant material using one of several extraction techniques (see more below). These extracts can have a variety of textures and consistency, including oil, sap, wax, butter, taffy, sauce, and more. These extractions, also known as cannabis concentrates, are concentrated forms of cannabis that solely contain the resin from trichomes and no plant material. The words “extract” and “concentrate” are synonymous.

The majority of concentrates or extracts are ingested while dabbing. Dabs are another name for concentrates or extracts that are ingested during dabbing.

Because they remove trichomes from plant material to create a concentrated version of cannabis, some concentrations or extracts, such kief, tinctures (which are typically alcohol extractions), and others, are not dabbed.

Vape pens, which use vape cartridges, are extractions that have been made less potent by the addition of additives. Because a dab rig is not used, vape pens and cartridges are not considered dab.
