The combination of promethazine and codeine is used to treat cough, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and other allergy or cold-related symptoms.

An antihistamine is methazine. It functions by blocking the effects of a chemical called histamine, which the body naturally produces. Itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes can all be brought on by histamine. It occasionally causes the bronchial tubes to shut, which makes breathing challenging. Codeine is a member of the class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics (pain medicines). To treat pain, it works on the central nervous system (CNS).

When used in excess of the recommended dosage, the cough suppressant promethazine-codeine can also cause relaxation and euphoria in addition to suppressing coughing. Additionally, it contains promethazine HCl, an antihistamine that also has sedative properties. Promethazine-codeine cough syrup is only available by prescription; however, it is occasionally abused.
